UCLA Engineers Become 6-Time RoboCup Soccer World Champions
Led by Dennis Hong, a professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering and director of the Robotics and Mechanisms Laboratory at UCLA, the team dominated at RoboCup 2024 July 18–21 in Eindhoven, Netherlands, with a pair of humanoid ARTEMIS robots winning every game in the soccer tournament to snag the world championship.

UCLA Researchers Part of National Science Foundation Project to Decarbonize Infrastructure
Mani Srivastava, a professor of electrical and computer engineering and computer science at the UCLA Samueli School of Engineering, and Deepak Rajagopal, an associate professor at the UCLA Institute of Environment and Sustainability, are part of a five-year, $12 million research program to decarbonize infrastructure by optimizing and automating carbon efficiency.

UCLA and Equatic to Build World’s Largest Ocean-Based Plant for Carbon Removal
The $20 million full-scale demonstration plant is supported by Singapore’s national water agency PUB and its National Research Foundation, as well as by UCLA’s Institute for Carbon Management led by civil and environmental engineering professor Gaurav Sant, with collaborations from David Jassby and Dante Simonetti, an associate professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering.

UCLA’s Online Engineering Master’s Program Again Ranked No. 1 in the U.S.
U.S. News & World Report has awarded the UCLA Samueli School of Engineering program the top spot in its online engineering rankings for the second year in a row and the sixth time in 10 years. The Master of Science in Engineering Online program is delivered entirely online, allowing professionals to earn a master’s degree while holding a full-time job.

UCLA Launches New Quantum Innovation Hub to Advance Quantum Science and Engineering

Eric P. Y. Chiou — a professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering — and Paul Weiss — a distinguished professor of chemistry and biochemistry, and materials science and engineering — have been elected as fellows of the National Academy of Inventors. Farewell, Dean Murthy!

Distinguished Professor Jayathi Murthy officially stepped down as the Ronald and Valerie Sugar Dean of the UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science on July 31 to become the president of Oregon State University beginning Sept. 9. On June 7, UCLA Interim Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost Michael Levine announced the appointment of then-Associate Dean for Research and Facility Resources Bruce Dunn as the interim dean, effective Aug. 1, and the school will soon begin a nationwide search for its next permanent dean.

$2 Million From Pritzker Foundation Establishes Chair in Sustainability at UCLA Samueli

Los Angeles philanthropists Tony and Jeanne Pritzker have pledged $2 million to UCLA Samueli through their charitable foundation. The funds will create the Pritzker Chair in Sustainability and support the faculty excellence fund, designed to attract and retain outstanding engineering professors. Gaurav Sant, director of the Institute for Carbon Management at UCLA and a professor of civil and environmental engineering, has been appointed as the inaugural chairholder.
