2018 Highlights
As we near the holidays and get ready to welcome a new year of engineering excellence at UCLA Samueli, following are a few of the many highlights of 2018. A heartfelt thanks to all who contributed to our combined success, and best wishes for a happy holiday season!

We are growing and pushing boundaries
We are expanding our facilities, as well as our team. We expanded into our new Engineering VI building, launched our Boelter Hall student makerspace, founded The Connection Lab, and added 16 new faculty members.

Our faculty are being recognized
Profs. Ann Karagozian, Stanley Osher, and Ali Sayed were inducted into the National Academy of Engineering, the second year in a row with three elected members. Four more faculty members were inducted into the National Academy of Inventors. Prof. Andrea Bertozzi was elected to the National Academy of Sciences, and The American Association for the Advancement of Science honored Prof. Aydogan Ozcan as a fellow.

Our students are engineering change
UCLA undergrads built two weather-monitoring satellites for NASA. The UCLA Rocket Project set a record. We received more applications than ever before--and members of our largest freshman class shared why they are excited to join UCLA Samueli.

OUR RESEARCH IS BREAKING NEW GROUND

We set a solar cell record

We developed speed-of-light AI

We designed the world’s most efficient semiconductor

We converted CO2 into building material

We advanced soft robotics

We developed artificial blood vessels

We bioengineered magnets to manage pain

We wrote the next chapter on artificial intelligence
