UCLA Receives $13 Million NIH Contract to Expand COVID-19 Testing
A novel COVID-19
diagnostic technology SwabSeq was developed last spring by a team led by
Prof. Eleazar Eskin, chair of the Computational Medicine Department,
which is affiliated with UCLA Engineering and the David Geffen School of
Medicine. The saliva test is highly accurate, scalable and inexpensive
and can be found in vending machines across campus — free to Bruin
cardholders. More than 30,000 SwabSeq tests are currently being
processed per week and with the new funding, UCLA will be able to
process 150,000 tests per day. The test kits are used by UCLA, the
Geffen Academy, UCSB, LAUSD, Pepperdine University and other schools.
