UCLA Researchers to Conduct First Pink Dye Tracer Experiment at Santa Monica Breakwater Visitors may notice the ocean waves turning pink September 15, 22–24 and 30 near the breakwater and pier because of a temporary, non-toxic dye used to study water quality. The research is led by Timu Gallien, an associate professor of civil and environmental engineering.
AI Co-Pilot Boosts Noninvasive Brain-Computer Interface by Interpreting User Intent Jonathan Kao, an associate professor of electrical and computer engineering, led research on the wearable system to help infer user intent and complete tasks. The study demonstrates advances that could aid technologies for people with paralysis and other neurological conditions.
AI Watching AI: Dangerous Errors in Digital Pathology Caught by UCLA System Aydogan Ozcan, the Volgenau Professor of Engineering Innovation and a professor of electrical and computer engineering and of bioengineering, led the development of the system, which can autonomously identify errors without requiring human-stained slides.
Earthquake Engineering Professor Jonathan Stewart Named Inaugural Holder of Sabol-Scott Endowed Term Chair The civil and environmental engineering professor is widely recognized as an expert in earthquake preparedness and mitigation. Research findings from his group are used by government agencies and industry organizations worldwide. The chair was created with a $500,000 gift from alum Thomas Sabol and his wife Carrie Scott Sabol, matched by the Samueli Foundation.
Research Calls for Better Protections from Salton Sea Pollution Isabella Arzeno-Soltero, an assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering, discusses her recent work on air quality and water pollution in the Salton Sea region on a San Diego public radio program.
UCLA Samueli Master’s Student Strikes a Chord Between Music and Engineering Thomas Freedman ’25, an electrical engineering graduate student who earned his bachelor’s degree from UCLA last spring in the same field after switching his major from music history and industry, is bridging the gap between audio engineers and music industry professionals.
