Congratulations to the Centennial Class of 2019! We celebrated another class of
newly-minted Bruin Engineers on June 15. A little advice for grads from
commencement speaker Chuck Lorre: “Stop sharing your life [on social
media], and start living it.”
Supporters Henry and Susan Samueli give $100 million Longtime supporters Henry and Susan
Samueli have given $100 million—the school’s largest gift ever—to
support the most significant period of growth since our founding in
1945. Learn more about our expansion plans in the Los Angeles Times.
No guts, no glory: We’re advancing microbiome research
Computer science professor Eran Halperin and team developed a
computational source-tracking tool, FEAST, to deduce the origins of any
microbiome, including that of the human gut. Doctoral student Liat
Shenhav explains on KFI Radio.
All-star research: We’re engineering CAR T-cells to beat cancer
Yvonne Chen, professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering, has
been named a Lloyd J. Old STAR (for “Scientists Taking Risks”) and
awarded $1.25 million for her immunotherapy research by the Cancer
Research Institute.
The real deal: We’re developing synthetic DNA
The Department of Energy has awarded professor Elisa Franco from
mechanical and aerospace engineering a grant to develop DNA-based
synthetic molecules. A potential use is for smart artificial
biomaterials.
