A Letter from the Dean to the UCLA Samueli Community These past few weeks have seen a
whirlwind of changes that impact each of us at school, at work, in our
homes and throughout communities around the globe. I am writing to share
with you, especially our students and their parents, what we have been
doing here at UCLA Samueli to adapt to this dynamic situation.
A Reflection on Remote Learning To capture a snapshot of what UCLA is
like with remote learning in place, we asked a few undergraduate
students in leadership roles to share their experiences so far.
Google Recognizes UCLA Samueli Faculty Research Four UCLA Samueli
School of Engineering faculty members have received 2019-2020 Google
Faculty Research Awards for their technical research in computer science
and engineering.
AI Pioneer Named Royal Statistical Society Honorary Fellow "Professor (Judea)
Pearl’s impact on statistics has been groundbreaking. In particular, he
is to be commended for his development of a calculus for causal
reasoning which has been momentous for both statistics and artificial
intelligence."
Computational Biologist Receives NSF CAREER Award
Sriram Sankararaman,
an assistant professor of computer science has received a National
Science Foundation CAREER award, the agency’s highest honor for early
career faculty members.
Postdoc Receives Chancellor’s Research Award
Zhe Chen, a computer
science postdoctoral scholar, was one of eight people to receive the
2019 Chancellor’s Award for Postdoctoral Research. He works on
developing connections between machines and the brain.
STUDENT HIGHLIGHT
A Bruin Engineer Explores Antarctica Aerospace engineering
doctoral student Dylan Dickstein recently returned from a two-week
expedition to Antarctica, one of the planet’s coldest and most remote
regions.
ALUMNI NEWS
Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property Andrei Iancu Triple-Bruin Andrei
Iancu is also the director of the U.S. Patent Office. His advice to UCLA
Samueli students: “Stay flexible with your career choices, because your
goals and opportunities may change over time. And at all times,
whatever you do at any one given moment, be ‘all in’ and give it
everything you’ve got.”
