UCLA, Aerospace Accelerator Starburst Win Federal Grant to Launch Innovation Hub UCLA and Starburst, a
leading global aerospace and defense accelerator, have been awarded a
2020 Venture Challenge grant of $1.4 million by the U.S. Economic
Development Administration — complemented by $1.4 million in private
matching funds — to create an aerospace innovation hub in Los Angeles.
Dean Murthy Formally Introduced as National Academy of Engineering Member Jayathi Murthy,

UCLA Cryptographers Solve Two-Decade-Old Problem A joint project
sponsored by NTT Research with cryptographers Amit Sahai and his
graduate student researcher Aayush Jain from UCLA and Huijia (Rachel)
Lin at University of Washington has solved a 20-year-old problem
involving indistinguishability obfuscation — the notion of making a
computer program “unintelligible” while preserving its functionality.
Engineer Awarded NIH Innovative Grant to Develop AI-driven Brain-Machine Interfaces Jonathan Kao, an
assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering, has received
a Director’s New Innovator Award from the National Institutes of
Health, which includes a $2.34 million grant to support his research on
brain-machine interfaces.
UCLA Draws Record $1.4 Billion in Research Funding UCLA attracted record
support for its wide-ranging research in the 2019–20 fiscal year,
receiving $1.427 billion in research funding. 2020 is the third
consecutive year that the university has topped its previous best.
Professor Elected to the Royal Academy of Engineering Asad Madni, a
distinguished adjunct professor of electrical and computer engineering,
has been elected an International Fellow of the Royal Academy of

appointed to the future of encryption committee by the national

UCLA Offers New Green Building LEED Lab Course Beginning Fall 2020 A yearlong course on
sustainable-building design with a pathway toward professional
certification made its debut this fall quarter, thanks to the

UCLA Samueli in 2018 with a degree in computer science, Apurva Panse
joined Google as an associate product manager on ChromeOS. Today, she
works at YouTube as a product manager.
Mechanical Engineering Alum Shares Insight on Life at Tesla Soon after graduating
from UCLA Samueli in 2014 with a degree in mechanical engineering, Matt
Kurihara joined Tesla as an intern. Six years later, he’s a senior
mechanical design engineer at the company.
