While continued vigilance and adherence to public health guidelines will be upheld, Ronald and Valerie Sugar Dean of Engineering Jayathi Murthy shared a hopeful video welcome message, congratulating newly admitted students on their hard work to earn admission and acknowledging the perseverance and resourcefulness of current Bruin engineers.
“While the pandemic made it necessary for us to stay physically distant, our students have found creative ways to continue club activities and innovative workshops remotely nonetheless,” Murthy said.
The return to campus will allow students to enjoy everything UCLA has to offer: top academics, a gorgeous campus and iconic cultural attractions in the heart of Los Angeles. Dean Murthy stressed the importance of engineering change that will improve our quality of life, noting the school’s excellence in research across a broad range of fields critical to the 21st century.
“UCLA Samueli has been, and will continue to be, at the forefront of disruptive technological breakthroughs across all fields of engineering and science,” Murthy said.
She also emphasized the importance of fostering a supportive and inclusive culture at UCLA Samueli with the goal of making the engineering community more inclusive.
“As engineers and computer scientists, we are natural problem solvers. But I also want us to learn to be compassionate collaborators,” Murthy said. “I want all of us to collectively build a better community, where we celebrate our differences and embrace one another no matter our gender, ethnicity or sexual orientation. We need to engineer together to make everyone — transfer students, international students and students from underrepresented populations —feel they belong here and that they are welcome and included.”
