Whether you took these past months to relax, work, or further your research, we extend a warm welcome to our new and returning students.

This year was highly competitive for the entering freshman class (read why they selected Samueli here). We received more than 26,200 applications for 775 spots, a 10-percent increase in applications over the prior year.

Perhaps even more telling, with the many outstanding California universities top-notch students from our state have to choose from, 40 percent of California residents we admitted chose to come to UCLA, a number that reflects not only the value of UCLA as the No. 1 public university in the country, but our exceptional academic excellence as well.

The students who were enrolled this year had a median weighted GPA of 4.54, a median combined SAT score of 1,520, and a median ACT math score of 35.

We are pleased to report our number of female engineering students in the incoming freshman class, 33 percent, also continues to grow. This year, we also added 15 new faculty members to the Samueli team across all departments.

The Computer Science Department is rapidly expanding in its new home, our new Engineering VI building.

And, in keeping with the high caliber of our faculty and students, UCLA Samueli maintained its standing in the Top 10 engineering schools among public universities nationwide, across both our undergraduate and graduate programs.

The university consistently performs well in a broad range of national and international rankings. We were ranked the No. 1 public university in the nation by both U.S. News & World Report and the Times Higher Education/Wall Street Journal. UCLA was also rated the No. 2 public university for positive impact on society by Washington Monthly and the No. 2 university for graduate employability by QS.

We couldn’t be more proud to be part of such a stellar academic institution. As the school year unfolds, we will have more updates on how we are continuing to excel.
