Each year, the UCLA Samueli School of Engineering honors alumni, faculty, students and other engineering leaders for outstanding achievements in their fields.

The following profile highlights the recipient of the Alum of the Year Award, the school’s highest honor.

Mukund Padmanabhan M.S. ’89, Ph.D. ’92 has been named the 2026 UCLA Samueli School of Engineering Alum of the Year, recognizing his accomplishments as an engineer and researcher, as well as his longstanding philanthropic support of UCLA and social and educational programs in the U.S. and India.

After graduating from UCLA with his master’s and doctoral degrees in electrical engineering, Padmanabhan joined the IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center, where he specialized in speech processing and led research and development of speech-recognition algorithms. His work in speech and signal processing has resulted in more than 80 technical papers and more than 20 U.S. patents.

Padmanabhan later brought his mathematical and statistical expertise to the financial industry. He is a partner and statistical researcher at Renaissance Technologies, a New York-based quantitative investment firm, where he applies his quantitative acumen to financial modeling and investment research.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Padmanabhan has been a longtime advocate for philanthropic causes. Through his Guru Krupa Foundation, Padmanabhan has supported initiatives in education, social welfare, culture and environmental conservation, including programs serving students and families in the United States and India, where he was born and raised.

A member of the UCLA Samueli Dean’s Executive Board, Padmanabhan has also made significant contributions to the school. His support helped fund the construction of the Engineering VI building, including the systems scaling laboratory, named in his honor, that houses one of the world’s leading groups in semiconductor research.

He has also made several substantial gifts to the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department. These include four endowed faculty term chairs supporting research in plasma physics, neuroengineering and cyber-physical systems, as well as three endowed graduate fellowships and an endowment for undergraduate scholarships.

In 2019, Padmanabhan was recognized with UCLA Samueli’s Professional Achievement Award. He also received the Distinguished Alumnus Award in 2021 from the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, where he earned his bachelor’s degree.
