Dean’s Welcome Message to Students

Dear UCLA Samueli Students,

Welcome to UCLA! I hope all of you enjoyed a fun and relaxing summer!

Congratulations to those of you who are newly admitted first year or transfer students! Your hard work has paid off and you are now joining one of the top engineering and computer science programs in the country. To our returning students, welcome back! We’ve missed seeing you and can’t wait to get the new quarter underway.

Like many of you, I am fairly new to the quarter system since this is only my second year as the dean of UCLA Samueli. Ten weeks fly by so quickly and it is exciting to get started with your journey. I know I am energized by this vibrant and extraordinary community I’m fortunate to call home.

Over the past year, I have met brilliant students who are passionate about being a part of solutions to real-world challenges that will improve lives for the better. I have met amazing faculty members who are leading breakthrough research in their fields while also working as dedicated teachers and mentors. At every event, I have been surrounded by enthusiastic parents, alumni and industry partners who are continuing to engage with our school in many ways. And last but not least, I have also witnessed firsthand our hard-working staff who dedicate their time and effort to support our faculty and students tirelessly. This is a wonderful, tight-knit community with a shared mission of inclusive excellence and where everyone should feel welcome.

At UCLA Samueli, we take pride in our collective contributions to society and humanity. The knowledge and skills you gain at UCLA will take you a long way, but most importantly, we encourage you to be compassionate, adaptive and thoughtful learners.

In the coming weeks and months, I look forward to getting to know all of you. You are the next generation of leaders and innovators who will engineer positive change and improve humanity globally. As proud members of the UCLA Samueli community, you will help enrich the Bruin legacy through your active participation in research, club activities and community service.

I can’t wait to see you get started! Have a successful new school year and Go Bruins!

Best,
