Since 1965, the UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science has honored its best and brightest at its annual Engineering Awards Dinner. Alumni, faculty and students are celebrated for their professional, technical and academic achievements, as well as their commitment to and support of UCLA Engineering.

Award Categories and Nomination Rules

The UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science is accepting nominations for the following award categories for 2019. Please submit nominations no later than July 30, 2018. Rules and requirements to submit an award nomination are listed at the bottom of this page.

Award Categories

Alumnus/Alumna of the Year Award
The Alumnus/Alumna of the Year Award honors the achievements of UCLA Engineering alumni who have brought distinction to the school and the profession. The school seeks candidates who have led exceptional careers in their chosen field, made significant contributions to enhance the school, provided notable service to the community and the profession, and served as role models.

Lifetime Contribution Award
The Lifetime Contribution Award honors individuals who have brought distinction to the profession and the school. Nominees need not be alumni of UCLA Engineering. The school seeks candidates who have led exceptional careers in their chosen field and made significant contributions to enhance the school.

Professional Achievement Award
The Professional Achievement Award honors the achievements of UCLA Engineering alumni in their chosen fields, including academia, industry and entrepreneurship. The school seeks candidates with distinguished career accomplishments; contributions to the engineering profession; a history of mentorship; and notable service to the community and the profession.

Rising Professional Achievement Award
The Rising Professional Achievement Award honors the early career achievements of alumni who are under the age of 40. The school seeks candidates with impactful accomplishments in academia, industry or entrepreneurship; contributions to the engineering profession; a demonstrated commitment to mentorship; and notable service to the community and the profession.

Engineering Alumni Association Service Award
The Engineering Alumni Association Service Award honors alumni or friends who have given of themselves in support of UCLA Engineering or the community at large. The school seeks candidates with records of generously contributing their time and their talents for the enrichment of others in a manner that benefits or brings honor to the school. If candidates work for UCLA or in community service roles, they must demonstrate an extraordinary record of service beyond their professional responsibilities.

Northrop Grumman Excellence in Teaching Award
The Northrop Grumman Excellence in Teaching Award honors the achievements of junior faculty members in the UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science. The school seeks candidates who have proven records of offering students the best possible engineering education through innovative and inspirational teaching methods, curriculum development and support of student academic efforts. Awardees must hold the title of Assistant Professor, Associate  Professor, Lecturer PSOE, or Lecturer SOE.

Lockheed Martin Excellence in Teaching Award
The Lockheed Martin Excellence in Teaching Award honors the achievements of senior faculty members in the UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science. The school seeks candidates who have proven records of offering students the best possible engineering education through innovative and inspirational teaching methods, curriculum development and support of student academic efforts. Awardees must hold the title of Professor or Teaching Professor.

University Service Award
The University Service Award honors Engineering faculty who demonstrate their dedication to UCLA Engineering and UCLA by participating in or leading high-impact campus-wide service activities. The school seeks candidates who are active members of high-level campus groups or committees, such as the Committee on Academic Personnel and the Academic Senate, or have performed significant service to the School through other means. Awardees may be tenure or tenure-track faculty.

The Edward K. Rice Outstanding Undergraduate Student Award
The Edward K. Rice Outstanding Undergraduate Student Award honors the achievements of distinguished students who received their bachelor’s degrees in the most recently completed academic year (2017-18). The school seeks candidates who have demonstrated academic and research excellence, leadership, and service to the school, university or community.

The Edward K. Rice Outstanding Master’s Student Award
The Edward K. Rice Outstanding Master’s Student Award honors the achievements of distinguished master’s students who received their degree in the most recently completed academic year (2017-18). The school seeks candidates who have demonstrated academic and research excellence, leadership, and service to the school, university or community.

The Edward K. Rice Outstanding Doctoral Student Award
The Edward K. Rice Outstanding Doctoral Student Award honors achievements of distinguished doctoral students who received their degree in the most recently completed academic year (2017-18). The school seeks candidates who have demonstrated academic and research excellence, leadership, and service to the school, university or community.

Submit a Nomination

All nominations must be submitted by July 30, 2018. A complete nomination packet includes:

  • The nominee’s resume or CV
  • Two or more letters in support of the nomination
  • Other supporting materials and documentation, if available
  • Contact information for the nominator, including phone number and email address

Nomination packet materials should reflect the nominee’s career highlights, including major breakthroughs and contributions; university or school service; community service; professional organizations and positions held; honors and awards; publications; and educational history.

Only complete nomination packets will be considered. Awards may not be presented in all categories in a given year. Self-nominations are welcome.

Awards will be presented at the UCLA Engineering Awards Dinner on March 16, 2019. Winners must be present to receive their awards.

The highest honor bestowed at the event is the Alumnus/Alumna of the Year. Established in 1965, this award honors the superior achievements of UCLA engineering alumni in their chosen fields of endeavor. Each recipient has a record of distinguished career accomplishments, complemented by a history of exceptional contributions to the engineering profession. Without exception, awardees have established new standards of excellence to which others in their fields may aspire.
